What’s New at Athletica? Rowing, Swimming, and Essential Training Insights!

Hello Reader,

We have a few updates from this past week that we're excited to share with you. These include:

  • Beta availability of rowing plans
  • Newly launched swim pace profile
  • Power/pace profile session tagging
  • Plus, other news.

1. Rowing Plans Now in Beta

As part of our mission to extend HIIT Science principles to more sports, we’re thrilled to introduce our rowing plans for sprint, standard, and long-distance events. Developed by our Athletica and HIIT Science teams, these plans are designed for both on-water and ergometer training, accommodating various training volumes. They are accessible to self-coached athletes and coaches alike. If you’re a rower and would like to participate in our beta testing, please reach out to hello@athletica.ai.

2. Swim Pace Profile Available

We are excited to announce the launch of swim pace profile charts for our triathletes. This feature has been in the works for some time but we haven't been able to confidently release, likely due to challenges in swimming data quality. However, with daily improvements in technology capturing swim pace and heart rate, we can now offer this valuable tool. Similar to running pace and cycling power, you can now view your swim pace profile under the charts section.

3. Power/Pace Profile Tagging

We're particularly enthusiastic about this feature and hope you will be too. Your Power and Pace Profiles now display the training session in which you achieved your maximal mean power or pace. Clicking on a data point takes you directly to that session for detailed analysis by both athlete and coach.

Reminder: All-New FREE Athlete Profiling Primer Course

Ever wonder why we focus so much on an athlete's power and pace profile in Athletica? These are fundamental to understanding your locomotor profile—how you move in your sport and in the world. Knowledge is power, and we want everyone to be empowered. That’s why we're offering a free email course that will teach you how to:

  • Build effective speed/power profiles
  • Avoid common athlete profiling pitfalls
  • Match athlete profiles with targeted training strategies
  • Predict performance in real time using speed or power profiles

Ultimately everything we aim to do at Athletica. Arm yourself with knowledge and be sure to check it out! Its a 100% free resource.

Looking forward to another great week everyone!

Train Smarter by Feeling First: Why We Built Athletica U “Don’t ever prescribe something to an athlete you haven’t felt yourself.” That line hit me hard the first time I heard it. I can still remember sitting in my office at High Performance Sport New Zealand, listening to sprint kayak coach Gordon Walker say those words. He wasn’t quoting science. He wasn’t reciting a textbook. He was laying out a coaching truth that would shape my entire philosophy moving forward. And he was absolutely...

Hello Reader You can now train with the same science-backed readiness system just validated in Scientific Reports. By tracking HRV, resting heart rate, and well-being together, Athletica helps you know when to push, when to hold, and when to rest—just like the world’s best endurance labs. That’s exactly the readiness triad we’ve been operationalising in Athletica for years, built on Dan Plews’ PhD work and a long line of studies showing how autonomic markers and subjective status can steer...

Hello Reader, On May 19, 2021 I published a simple piece: “Why Athletica.” It laid out a hope. That science, thoughtfully encoded, could help everyday athletes train well, stay healthy, and perform. Today that hope feels a little surreal. Luke Evans, a Toronto-based engineer who started triathlon five years ago, recently used Athletica to self-coach his way to the overall win at IRONMAN Canada–Ottawa (8:40:22). Below are the podcast, the deep-dive blog, and the principles behind the...
