When Systems Meet Scale

Hi everyone,

Over the past month, many of you experienced turbulence across Athletica.

We know that when your training doesn’t work smoothly, explanations don’t matter. Outcomes do.
Still, I want to briefly explain what happened, why it mattered, and where we are now.

At its core, Athletica is not a chatbot or a dashboard. It’s a sports science system.

The figure below shows the Athletica architecture. Raw data from your wearables doesn’t go straight to a screen or an AI response. It’s first parsed, organised, and accumulated into a longitudinal athlete record. At the centre sits the LAB, where physiological models compute training load, profiling, readiness, and adaptation over time. The AI layer sits on top of this system, interpreting those outputs so you can act on them.

This is also why the launch was stressful for the platform. When a system reasons over history rather than displaying data, scale exposes everything at once.

The good news is this: the system is now stronger than it was before launch.

Athletica can better support beginners without diluting what advanced athletes need. The Athletica Coach can now help across training history, recovery, pacing, long-term development, and learning through Athletica U. The science held. The engineering learned.

If you’d like a deeper explanation of how the system works, why we chose this path, and what Sports Science 3.0 looks like in practice, I’ve written a longer piece here.

Finally, to bring this full circle: Workout Wizard.

Workout Wizard is the interface that returns the full depth of this intelligence back to you in a practical, moment‑to‑moment way. It’s currently being extensively tested by our beta group, and their feedback is shaping how we help athletes adapt sessions confidently, safely, and intelligently in the real world. This is the last major piece of the puzzle to implement into the New Athletica Experience, and we’re expecting it to be available for everyone as early as next week – better than ever.

Thank you to everyone who stuck with us, reported issues, and helped improve the system.

More soon,
Paul
